Stress is so normal in modern Australian life that most of us stop noticing it. But the body keeps score. Here are five signs that your stress response has been switched on for too long.
1. You wake up tired
Even after a full night in bed, you feel unrefreshed. Chronic stress keeps cortisol elevated, which fragments deep sleep and leaves you flat in the morning.
2. Your jaw, neck or shoulders ache
Muscle tension is the body bracing for a threat that never arrives. Teeth grinding, tension headaches and a stiff neck are classic stress signatures.
3. You reach for sugar, caffeine or wine
When the nervous system is depleted, it looks for quick regulation. Cravings for sugar, that third coffee or a nightly glass of wine are often the body attempting to self-soothe.
4. Small things feel like big things
Snapping at a partner, road rage, tears over a minor setback — an overloaded nervous system has no buffer left for the ordinary frictions of life.
5. Your mind will not switch off
Racing thoughts at 2 am, replaying conversations, worrying about tomorrow. A brain stuck in threat-detection mode cannot easily downshift into rest.
“The goal is not to eliminate stress — it is to teach the nervous system how to switch off again.”
What helps
Mindfulness practice, movement, boundaries around work and screens, and quality sleep all matter. When the pattern feels entrenched, hypnotherapy can help the unconscious mind reset its default from alert to calm — often in just a few sessions.
